We flew to Calgary from Vancouver, across the Rockies again. We weren't inspired by the city. Bleak. Bland. | |
We woke to local police hiding in the back alley behind our room, jumping out to pull over drivers who failed to stop at an awkward intersection. |

We found a mall to visit near our motel. Big, clean, bright, empty sprawling mall. I found a place that grew trays of freshly sprouted grass. The attendant clipped out a little square patch of the grass with a pair of scissors. She stuffed the grass into a big metal juicing machine, and a little dribble of green liquid trickled out. She served it in a little, tiny paper cup. And it tasted like a fresh mown lawn. Very healthy I suppose. The highlight of the stay was driving around in a magnificent thunderstorm, finding the all-night Wendy's for chicken burgers. |

The next day, in our newly rented car, we drove south through the hot, dry prairies. I wanted to visit a place I'd heard about where, in pre-European times, herds of bison had been stampeded off a cliff. The harvest of bodies was a key resource supporting the lives and culture of the local inhabitants. HEAD-SMASHED-IN BUFFALO JUMP Link to Head-Smashed-In Web Site |

The bison were driven down from the left, over 8km through marked drive lanes, and then over the cliffs. |
We drove into the Rockies for the first time in southern Alberta by way of the Crow's Nest Pass. We checked out each of the little towns we came to, looking for somewhere to stay the night. Finally arrived in Fernie, BC. Beautiful little town with a great attitude. We ended up staying two nights. |

Marsha & Jen heading for our motel. It's in the centre, on the second floor. |
And this is the view from the balcony. |
The town's main season is winter when the ski lodges are open. The summer is slower, and the prices are cheaper. It's a vibrant, young community with an active online presence.

Have to rave about the meal we were served here. |
